The story, the events of which take place in 1889, tells the strange story of a young consultant from London, a hydraulic engineer, Mr. Victor Hatherly. A man who called himself Lysander Stark came to Hatherly. He offered Hatherley a job in a country house - for the apparently large sum of 50 guineas, to set up a mysterious hydraulic press...
