The Nightingale

'The Nightingale', or 'The Imperial Nightingale' (Danish: Nattergalen) is a fairy tale by the Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen, written in 1843. 'The Nightingale' by Hans Christian Andersen is a tale of natural beauty, art and inspiration. In this story, the king of a country, living peacefully in the luxury of his palace, one day learns about a beautiful nightingale that sings in the forest and will bring him joy with its music. He orders his servants to find the nightingale and bring it to the palace. However, when a mechanical nightingale takes up residence in the palace, which can sing at any moment at the command of the king, the natural nightingale leaves. Because of this, the king is confronted with his own pride and complacency. But when the king falls seriously ill, he realizes that a life of true beauty and art is much more important than the glitter and noise of artificial brilliance. His best medicine is the song of the nightingale, which overcomes the disease. But although the nightingale returns, it cannot stay in the palace, because it belongs to nature. The tale also shows how pride and arrogance can distance us from true value in life.
