ലക്ഷണമൊത്ത ആദ്യ മലയാളനോവൽ എന്ന് വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കപ്പെട്ടിട്ടുള്ള കൃതിയാണ് ചന്തുമേനോന്റെ ഇന്ദുലേഖ. 1889-ലാണ് ഇന്ദുലേഖ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിക്കുന്നത്. ഒരു നായർ കുടുംബത്തിലെ കഥയാണ് ഈ നോവലിന്റെ ഇതിവൃത്തം. നായർ-നമ്പൂതിരി സമുദായങ്ങളിലെ മരുമക്കത്തായവും, ജാതി വ്യവസ്ഥയും നമ്പൂതിരിമാർ പല വേളികൾ കഴിക്കുന്ന സമ്പ്രദായവും[അവലംബം ആവശ്യമാണ്] അന്നത്തെ നായർ സമുദായച്യുതിയും ഇന്ദുലേഖയുടെയും മാധവന്റെയും പ്രണയകഥയിലൂടെ ചന്തുമേനോൻ അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. Indulekha is a Malayalam novel written by O. Chandu Menon. Published in 1889, it was the first major novel in the Malayalam language. It was a landmark in the history of Malayalam literature and initiated the novel as a new flourishing genre.[1] The novel is about a beautiful, well-educated lady from a Nair family.
