Tamino, a prince lost in a foreign land, is pursued by a fearsome monster. He is rescued by three enigmatic ladies, who slay the creature and present him with a portrait of Pamina, daughter of the Queen of the Night, with whom he instantly falls in love. To win the princess's hand, Tamino must undergo a series of trials. Armed with a magic flute and a set of enchanted bells, and accompanied by his comical sidekick Papageno, he sets out on his quest. Under the guidance of the high priest Sarastro, Tamino, Papageno and Pamina confront Pamina's mother, the formidable and mysterious Queen of the Night.
