குழந்தைப் பேறின்மையை இயல்பானதாக மக்கள் ஏற்றுக்கொள்வதில்லை. அத்தம்பதியரைக் கிட்டத்தட்டச் சமூக விலக்கம் செய்துவிடுகின்றனர். அவர்களுக்குப் பொது வெளியில்லை. சடங்குகளில் அவர்கள் பங்கேற்க இயலாது. ஒரு குழந்தையைக் கொஞ்சுவதற்குக்கூட அவர்களுக்கு அனுமதியில்லை. அப்படிப் புறக்கணிப்புக்கு உள்ளாகும் பொன்னா, காளி ஆகிய இணையரின் வாழ்வைப் பற்றிய நாவல் இது. இருபதாம் நூற்றாண்டின் நடுப்பகுதியில் நடைபெறும் கதை. விதிகளை வகுத்திருக்கும் சமூகம் விதிமீறல்களுக்கும் ஓரளவு இடம் தருகிறது. நம்பிக்கையை அடிப்படையாகக் கொண்டு குழந்தைப் பேறுக்காகச் சமூகம் அனுமதிக்கும் விதிமீறல் ஒன்றைப் பயன்படுத்தும் இத்தம்பதியினர் எதிர்கொள்ளும் உறவுச் சிக்கல்களை நாவல் மையப்படுத்திப் பேசுகிறது. 2010ஆம் ஆண்டு எழுதப்பட்ட இந்நாவல் பெரிதும் கவனம் பெற்றது. ஆங்கிலத்தில் வெளியான பிறகு 2015 ஜனவரியில் இந்நாவலைத் தடை செய்யும் கோரிக்கைகள் எழுந்தன. 'எழுத்தாளன் இறந்துவிட்டான்' என்று இந்நாவலாசிரியரை அறிவிக்கச் செய்யும் அளவுக்குப் போராட்டங்கள் இருந்தன. சென்னை உயர்நீதிமன்றத் தீர்ப்பு எழுத்தாளரை உயிர்ப்பித்ததோடு இந்நாவலை மீண்டும் வாசகருக்குக் கிடைக்கச் செய்தது. இந்திய மொழிகள் பலவற்றிலும் உலக மொழிகளிலும் இந்நாவல் மொழிபெயர்க்கப்பட்டு லட்சக்கணக்கான வாசகரைச் சென்றடைந்துள்ளது. People do not accept infertility as normal. The couple is almost socially excluded. They have no public space. They are unable to participate in rituals. They are not even allowed to caress a baby. This is a novel about the lives of Ponna and Kali, who are neglected like so. The story takes place in the middle of the twentieth century. The rule-making community also gives some space for irregularities. The novel focuses on the relationship problems faced by the couple, who use one of the community-sanctioned practices. Written in 2010, the novel received much attention. Demands to ban the book arose in January 2015 after its release in English. There were enough persecutions to get the novelist to declare that 'the writer is dead'. The judgment of the Madras High Court revived the writer and made the novel available to the reader again.
